Megan & Adam :: IN LOVE :: HOLLAND ENGAGEMENT SESSION
We met at college at Illinois State University. We were both working at the Student Recreational Center. Megan was a “supervisor” and Adam had recently gotten a job as a menial “Rec Assistant.” We started flirting over games of HORSE on the basketball court, cleaning the equipment and drawing dirty pictures at the Juice Bar on our shifts. It was summertime, and there were mostly just student staff on campus which meant a lot of time bonding and going out with the Rec Center co-workers. This friendship quickly turned into a “summer fling” that has lasted for 6 years. We both confessed later that we knew we would get married within a few weeks of being friends. From the summer when we fell in love to now, we have basically been inseparable. Going through college, extra semesters of college, getting our first jobs, moving all over the city of Chicago together and eventually moving out to Denver we treat every day as if we are still having the best “summer fling” ever.
The proposal took place on an autumn trip to Colorado before we had moved from Chicago to Denver. I had been thinking that Adam might propose sometime that year, but I really had no idea when. I kept thinking that maybe he would do it on our trip, but I also kept forgetting about it. We had always moved at our pace, and getting married was on the list but there was no rush. We did a hike up in Rocky Mountain National Park on a brisk and beautiful fall day. It was not an easy hike for either of us, but especially me. I blame it on the altitude. We finally reached our destination, a lake called The Loch. It was breathtaking, not only because it was beautiful, but also because I was literally starved of oxygen. We settled on a large rock to eat some PB sandwiches and admire the scenery. We took some photos and then I decided that I had to take a nap before we could make the trek down. I slept on a patch of dirt for a while. Little did I know, that I was using the backpack that contained the ring in it as a pillow. Adam had set up his tripod and was taking photos (he enjoys photography as a hobby). When I awoke, I was ready to get down the mountain. Adam suggested we take a couple photos using the tripod. You would think by this point I would understand what was happening, but I didn’t. As we were standing for the photo, (which was actually being recorded) Adam proposed with the lake and mountains as the backdrop. It truly was magical. We then hiked down and enjoyed a night out in Boulder, CO while calling some family and friends and spent the rest of the weekend enjoying Denver, which would later become our new home.
1. The part where I slept on the bag that had the ring it in for an hour. 2. Our other favorite part of our proposal was the dinner afterwards. Adam wasn’t sure what would happen on the mountain or when we would get back so we didn’t have an official plan. I decided to look up a nice restaurant in the area that had availability. Little did we know, that it was basically the fanciest restaurant in Colorado. Our clothes were kind of wrinkled from traveling and our Airbnb had no iron, we were tired and sunburnt and I was also wearing Birkenstocks. (HAHA). We walked in and the whole restaurant was decked out in fancy clothes, candle light – the whole nine yards. I was about to walk out because of embarrassment. The Maître De was all over us, looking us up and down. We told him we had just gotten engagement and he pulled out ALL the stops. We were basically falling asleep over a five course meal in wrinkled clothes, but we were excited and happy and it was hilariously funny.
What Megan loves about Adam : The thing I love most about Adam is how kind he is to everyone. He accepts everyone as they are and always sees the best in people. He always allows me to be the most true and honest version of myself, and I never have to hide anything. He is a loyal friend, a true companion and is always up for anything making him the best person in the world to spend the rest of your life with. Bonus – we like all the things and hate all the same things and we think the same things are funny. Match made in heaven.
What do you love most about each other?
What Adam loves about Megan: What I love and admire about Megan is her strength and confidence of being the best version of herself. She is a person of true character. Sharp and intelligent – she is a woman who does not shy away from tough situations, but embraces them as her next great feat. She is someone who is not afraid to tell it like it is. Her honesty, and more importantly, her compassion is something I appreciate when I see myself in situations of doubt. She has been, and will continue to be, someone who will always be there for me. Her passionate side goes hand-in-hand with her fun and adventurous side – which is what I love most. Megan is always on the lookout to get out there and try something new – a new trail, a new part of town, a new coffee shop, or even a new bar. Full of curiosity, her tag line would be “Let’s get out there!” Megan also has a fun, comedic wit to her. Always quick with a joke (appropriate or not), she can put a smile on anyone’s face, in any situation, regardless if she knows you or not. She is someone who can truly, and will always, bring out that “young, wild, and free” spirit in anyone – and that is why I love her so much.
